Seal engraving is called Ten-koku because letters are engraved in the Ten-sho writing style
and “koku” means to engrave. The Ten-sho writing style was established when Shi Huang of
Qin founded the first unified empire in the history of China. His empire consisted of many different
races so he found it necessary to set a standardized writing style for official use.
Ten-sho style was also used for the emperor’s seal, so this writing style is still regarded as having authority
and as having been the origin of refined Kanji characters that developed later.
In fact, it is still used for Japanese passports today.
